Schiaparelli's Surrealist Jewelry Collection Inspired by Dalí

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Maison Schiaparelli, under artistic director Daniel Roseberry, has launched the 'Body part jewelry' collection for Spring-Summer 2021, drawing inspiration from Salvador Dalí's surrealism. The collection features audacious, oversized pieces such as nipple-shaped earrings, dental necklaces, and glasses with painted eyes on lenses for a trompe-l'oeil effect. Other items include thimbles simulating long gilded fingers (both hands and feet) and a mask that transforms the lower face into a hieratic sculpture. The collection also includes the famous 'Eye of Cocteau', a surrealist symbol originally created by Jean Cocteau for Schiaparelli in 1937, later reinterpreted by Dalí as 'Eye of Time', a platinum and diamond brooch with clock hands set in the iris marking an unspecified suspended hour. Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973), the legendary founder of the house, considered dress design an art and revolutionized fashion from the late 1920s with iconic haute couture, sportswear, perfumes, and accessories. She was known for collaborations with artists of the Parisian scene in the 1930s, including Dalí, Cocteau, Man Ray, and Alberto Giacometti. The collection is available at schiaparelli.com.
