Scènes roumaines at Espace culturel Louis Vuitton Paris
The exhibition 'Scènes roumaines' at Espace culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris (October 11, 2013 – January 12, 2014) showcases contemporary Romanian painting, curated by Hervé Mikaeloff. It features works by older generation artists Ion Grigorescu (b. 1945), Geta Bratescu (b. 1926), and Ioana Batranu (b. 1960), whose jute-canvas interiors evoke pre-communist opulence. The show highlights the Cluj school, a group of Transylvanian artists including Adrian Ghenie (b. 1977), Victor Man, and Serban Savu, who established the Fabrica de Pensule studio in Cluj-Napoca. Younger artists include Dan Beudean (b. 1980) with pencil drawings of a hooded bird and a rifleman surrounded by cats, Oana Farcas (b. 1981) whose painting 'Oblivion' depicts phosphorescent forest light, and Sergiu Toma (b. 1987) whose hyperrealist compositions feature a hairy creature. Ghenie's 'Dr Josef' portrays Nazi doctor Mengele flayed, with scraped paint layers suggesting historical excavation. The exhibition is almost entirely pictorial, a choice Mikaeloff describes as a reflection of the current Romanian scene.
