Save The Children's Animated Short Tackles Summer Holiday Poverty

Save The Children has unveiled a 90-second animated short titled 'The Elephant in the Room', featuring illustrations by Alice Bowsher and animation by Plastic Horse, to shed light on the financial burdens summer holidays impose on families in the UK. The narrative, voiced by British actor Himesh Patel, presents a child's viewpoint on the often-ignored issue of summer holiday poverty. Research from Save The Children reveals that 60% of parents consider summer to be the most financially challenging season, even surpassing Christmas. The initiative seeks to provide resources for families in need and eliminate the stigma surrounding this topic. Drawing from 90s children's shows like Sesame Street, Bowsher crafted the visual style. David Gilbert of Plastic Horse praised the collaboration, while Dan Paskin, Save The Children’s UK executive director, highlighted that four million children are facing poverty this summer. The charity has distributed over 10,500 grants to assist more than 21,000 children through 120 local partners across 30 UK communities.
