Saul Leiter's Photography and Painting in Bologna Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-26

A major exhibition of Saul Leiter's work opens at Palazzo Pallavicini in Bologna from March 5 to July 19, 2026. Titled "Una finestra punteggiata di gocce di pioggia" (A Window Dotted with Raindrops), it is organized by Vertigo Syndrome in collaboration with Chroma photography and the Saul Leiter Foundation. The show brings together 126 black-and-white photographs, 40 color photographs, 42 paintings, vintage magazines, and a film document, highlighting Leiter's dual nature as painter and photographer. Curator Anne Morin emphasizes Leiter's focus on imperfection and the everyday, describing his work as visual haikus. The exhibition also features contemporary artist Ernesto Anderle, whose nervous sketches create unexpected resonances with Leiter's temporal dimension. Morin gave more space to Leiter's black-and-white work, often overlooked, to show his singular vision without color. Leiter, who moved to New York in 1946 after breaking from his rabbi father, lived a poor, free life aligned with the Beat Generation. He used fashion photography as a means of support but abandoned it when editorial constraints limited his creativity. The exhibition includes rarely explored archival materials, presenting a coherent portrait of an elusive artist who found poetry in the margins.
