Satosyama Terrace by Tatsuro Sasaki Architects reinterprets traditional Japanese landscape for contemporary hospitality

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

Tatsuro Sasaki Architects has completed Satoyama Terrace, a 648 m² hospitality project in 2025 that reinterprets traditional Japanese satoyama landscapes. The design, led by Tatsuro Sasaki with project architect Daiki Kato, avoids nostalgic reproduction of rural scenery by treating natural elements as active forces shaping spatial experience. Water, wind, soil, and vegetation become central to how visitors perceive and occupy the space. The project team includes structural engineering by KAP, mechanical engineering by Kawamura MEP Engineering, and electrical engineering by Kami Equipment Planning & Design. Lighting design was handled by ICE Ltd., with landscape architecture by PLATdesign and construction by Sasahara Builders. Photographer Junpei Kato documented the project, which was curated by Miwa Negoro. Satoyama Terrace represents a contemporary approach to architecture that engages with dynamic natural systems rather than creating static images of landscape. The project fundamentally questions how architecture can interact with environments where human activity and nature have historically coexisted in balance.
