Sasha Denisova's Kristolit: A Variable Serif Blending Scotch Roman Tradition with Modern Tech

Sasha Denisova, a Belgrade-based art director, has designed Kristolit Variable, a serif typeface that merges Scotch Roman historical roots with contemporary variable font technology. Inspired by 19th-century Scotch Roman typefaces popularized in Britain and the United States, Kristolit offers regular and italic styles with weights from book to black, supporting Latin-based languages and Cyrillic for Serbian, Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian. Key design features include sharp geometric lines, moderate contrast, closed apertures, vertical axes, and true italics with a handwritten feel. During development, Denisova studied Figgins Foundry's Antique slab serif fonts to refine bolder weights by reducing contrast and simplifying forms. The italic version preserves historical calligraphic influences, especially in Cyrillic. Kristolit is available for trial and purchase at sasha.denisova.xyz, targeting branding, editorial layouts, and digital interfaces. Denisova noted the project began as a week-long challenge to design a complete Latin character set, evolving into a balance of structure and elegance.
