Sardinian Mining Village Normann Revived by Community Art Collective
The abandoned mining village of Normann in Sardinia's Sulcis-Iglesiente region has been transformed through grassroots initiatives led by Collettivo Giuseppefraugallery and the Villaggio Normann O.D.V. association. Founded in 2009, the collective has organized free contemporary art schools, restored trails, and created a communal Belvedere designed by architect Francesco Careri. The project, funded by the Comune di Gonnesa, Parco Geominerario, and Fondazione di Sardegna, includes the Sentieri della Memoria trail network and annual events like Estate a Normann. The Belvedere features a stone seating circle inspired by Nuragic meeting huts and a monument to mining horses, notably the horse Bosano buried there in 1957. The initiative aims to preserve not only Normann but all mining villages in Sardinia.
