Sarah Sze's Metronome installation at OGR Turin explores image proliferation
Sarah Sze's installation Metronome, first presented in 2023 at Peckham Rye station in London, is now on view at OGR Torino in the Binario 1 space, curated by Samuele Piazza. The work addresses the technological revolution of image proliferation, with billions of people producing, consuming, and sharing images globally. Writer Zadie Smith compared the experience to "finding oneself in front of an open iPhone." Sze describes the piece as being about the act of seeing, which is always a process of assembling different things. The semicircular concave structure consists of metal rods supporting sheets of paper that act as small screens projecting a continuous loop of images. Sze built the work in her New York studio and reassembled it at OGR. She cites physicist Carlo Rovelli as an influence, admiring his ability to explain complex topics clearly. The installation creates a narrative that occupies the entire space, paying homage to Italian Renaissance perspective. Sze compares the contemporary experience to a continuous magic lantern that merges images from phones, memory, and surroundings. She recalls that in the 1990s photography was not allowed in museums, but she wanted everyone to create their own memory of art, which is why she creates immersive installations like Metronome that offer a flow of images belonging to both present and future.
