institutional · 2026-04-20

Sarah Meister will become the new executive director of Aperture Foundation, the American photography nonprofit. She currently serves as a photography curator at New York's Museum of Modern Art, where she began working in 1996 as a curatorial assistant. Meister replaces Chris Boot, who has led the foundation since 2011. Boot oversaw Aperture's book publishing, magazine operations, and exhibition programming during his tenure. Among Meister's notable exhibitions at MoMA are 'From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola' (2015), 'Modern Photographs from the Thomas Walther Collection, 1909–1949' (2014–15), and 'Nicholas Nixon: Forty Years of The Brown Sisters' (2014). She also curated 'Walker Evans American Photographs, 75th anniversary' (2013–14), 'Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light' (2013), and 'Eugène Atget: "Documents pour artistes"' (2012). In 2020, Meister organized 'Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures' and is currently developing an exhibition about São Paulo's Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB), Brazil's leading amateur photography club founded in 1939. Dorothea Lange was one of Aperture's founders in 1952, alongside Ansel Adams and Minor White.
