Sarah Mazzetti's Graphic Novel Explores Giorgio Morandi's World
A new illustrated book titled 'Elsa, Morandi e l’Uovoverde' by Sarah Mazzetti, published by Canicola on April 7, 2023, uses a comic format to explore the life and work of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. The volume is part of the zero99 series aimed at both children and adults. It features a surreal narrative where a young witch named Elsa disrupts Morandi's routine, leading him into a dreamlike dimension. Mazzetti, an illustrator for The New Yorker, The Guardian, and The New York Times, describes the challenge of approaching Morandi's opposite personality but finds resonance in his obsessive focus on form. The book was presented at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. An exhibition of original drawings opens March 6 at Casa Museo Giorgio Morandi in Bologna, and a meeting with the author is scheduled for April 30 at MAMbo. The story is set in Morandi's home at via Fondazza 36, where he lived with his sisters Annetta, Dina, and Maria Teresa.
