Sarah Lucas Retrospective at New Museum in New York
The New Museum in New York will host a major retrospective of British artist Sarah Lucas, opening September 26, 2018. Curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Edlis Neeson, and Margot Norton, the exhibition will occupy the second, third, and fourth floors of the Bowery institution, featuring a comprehensive selection of sculptures, photographs, and installations from throughout Lucas's career. The show will address themes of death, sex, and religion that characterize contemporary life and the artist's work. A catalogue including an interview with Lucas by Gioni will accompany the exhibition. Lucas, born in 1962 in Holloway, UK, was a key figure in the Young British Artists movement, known for irreverent, provocative art that critiques societal stereotypes and feminist issues. She previously represented Great Britain at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Gioni and Lucas previously collaborated in 2016 in Milan for the project "Innamemorabiliamumbum" at the Albergo Diurno, organized by Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, FAI, and the Comune di Milano. The New Museum was founded in 1977 by former Whitney curator Marcia Tucker to showcase emerging and living artists. Its current building at 235 Bowery opened in December 2007 with the exhibition "Unmonumental."
