Sarah Al-Sarraj's First London Solo Show at Mimosa House
Sarah Al-Sarraj is showcasing her inaugural solo exhibition in London, titled 'Limbs of the Lunar Disc,' at Mimosa House, in collaboration with the Arab British Centre and Shubbak Festival. This exhibition includes both new and previously created pieces, featuring a collection of paintings on sizable wooden panels that illustrate the imagined lifestyles of a temporally nomadic tribe, drawing inspiration from ancient Arabian navigation and Indigenous ecological calendars. These artworks were initially crafted for her first solo show, 'Separated by Millennia,' at Two Queens Gallery in Leicester, which also encompassed a research installation and a public program at the National Space Centre. Al-Sarraj has since participated in residencies in Cairo for the Downtown Contemporary Art Fair and with UK New Artists #3 Cohort: the Language of Machines. Additionally, the exhibition introduces 'Isthmus Ancient River' (2025), an immersive film commissioned by Helen Starr's Mechatronic Library, which delves into themes of ecological violence and deep time. Influenced by scholars such as Laura Nasrallah, Kathryn Yusoff, and Karim A. Kassam, the artworks challenge extractive linear temporalities and advocate for regenerative ecological perspectives on time, addressing issues like nuclear waste isolation, resource extraction, and extensive irrigation. The exhibition is part of the Shubbak Festival.
