Sara Fratini's Mural 'Vecinas' Celebrates Multiculturalism in Calabrian Village
Venezuelan street artist Sara Fratini (Puerto Ordaz, 1985) created the mural 'Vecinas' within the Greek amphitheater of Roccabernarda, a village of 3,000 inhabitants in the province of Crotone, Calabria. The work depicts seven women from different cultures—Calabrian, indigenous, African, and European—reflecting the artist's personal history. Fratini, who co-organizes the CinemAmbulante project with director Giulio Vita, executed the mural in one and a half days using simple lines and orange details to enhance visibility. The piece symbolizes integration and multiculturalism, inspired by Roccabernarda's positive example of coexistence. CinemAmbulante is a multicultural film festival that since 2018 has offered screenings and a cinema residency in Amantea (CS), supported by the MigrArti grant from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The 2018 edition ran from June 10 to 21 across the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro, Crotone, and Reggio Calabria, in collaboration with local associations. Fratini and Vita founded the association La Guarimba in 2012, which revived a 938-seat open-air cinema in Amantea in 2013 and launched the La Guarimba International Film Festival, now in its sixth year, focusing on international short films and illustration. The next edition will take place from August 7 to 11 in Amantea, featuring French director Vincent Moon, who will shoot a short film in the town.
