Sansepolcro in Tuscany becomes a diffuse museum with guided tours

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Sansepolcro, the Tuscan birthplace of Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca, has transformed into a diffuse museum through the project 'Scopri Sansepolcro'. The initiative is promoted by CasermArcheologica, a urban regeneration project that converted the former Carabinieri barracks inside Palazzo Muglioni into a contemporary arts center and workspace for young professionals. The diffuse museum includes stops at the Campanile del Duomo, the Archives of the Resistance and Diocesan, the Museums of Lace and Stained Glass, the headquarters of the Balestrieri Society, and the Civic Museum housing Piero della Francesca's works. Guided tours are held every Saturday until September. Laura Caruso, co-director of CasermArcheologica with Ilaria Margutti, describes the project as a virtuous co-planning experience between public and private entities: the Municipality of Sansepolcro, the Tourist Office, the Guide Center of the Province of Arezzo, CasermArcheologica, and six associations, with support from the Tuscany Region. The goal is to enhance and make accessible the city's tangible and intangible heritage, targeting tourists and locals, especially the young. At CasermArcheologica, the exhibition 'Archetipi Transitori' by Elio Mariucci is on view until September 19. Reservations for tours are required by calling 0575 740536, and anti-COVID regulations must be followed.
