Sanna Kannisto's White Space at NonostanteMarras, Milan

On November 17, 2017, Finnish photographer Sanna Kannisto (born 1974 in Hämeenlinna, based in Helsinki) will lead a guided tour at NonostanteMarras in Milan, featuring projections on her compositional technique and a presentation of her book White Space. The exhibition, also titled White Space, takes its name from the photographic backdrops that isolate floral and faunal elements—butterflies, flowering branches, hummingbirds—from their natural habitats, capturing them in an eternal stasis. Kannisto's series on view include Days of Departure (2015) and Act of Flying (2006), displayed on the richly decorated walls of the venue on via Cola di Rienzo. The artist's practice transcends traditional still life by extracting each element from its surroundings and relating it solely to itself.
