Sanja Iveković's Women's House Project Expands to Poland with Abortion Focus

publication · 2026-04-19

Sanja Iveković inaugurated her first solo exhibition titled "Practice Makes the Master" at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, Poland, running from October 17 to December 13, 2009, with Magdalena Ziółkowska as the curator. The exhibition showcased a Polish adaptation of her project Women's House (Sunglasses), which addresses abortion rights in partnership with the Federation for Women and Family Planning. This initiative, inspired by her time at the Centre for Women's Studies in Zagreb, involves women crafting plaster casts of their faces while sharing personal narratives. Since its initial presentation at Manifesta 2 in 1998, the project has gained international recognition. Iveković is also engaged in research for a Museum of Modern Art commission focused on women's contributions to Poland's Solidarity movement. An interview conducted by Katarzyna Pabijanek occurred on October 18, 2009.
