Sandy Schreier's Fashion Collection at the Met's Costume Institute

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced its next major Costume Institute exhibition, following 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'. Titled 'Pursuit of Fashion: The Sandy Schreier Collection', the show will feature around 80 of the 165 pieces promised as a gift by Sandy Schreier, the foremost American collector of haute couture. The exhibition includes garments by Cristóbal Balenciaga, Paul Poiret, Gilbert Adrian, and Charles James; outerwear by Georges Lepape for Poiret, Zandra Rhodes, and Maria Monaci Gallenga; creations by Mariano Fortuny and Karl Lagerfeld; and accessories by Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy. Schreier began collecting as a child in Detroit, where her father managed the fur department at the Russeks department store. She would receive one-worn haute couture garments from wealthy clients, delivered in original Lanvin or Chanel boxes. Her collection now numbers at least 15,000 pieces, making it the largest private collection of haute couture in the world. Schreier never wore the pieces but collected them out of appreciation for fashion as an art form. The exhibition runs from November 27, 2019, to May 17, 2020, at the Anna Wintour Costume Institute.
