Sandra Barclay and Gloria Cabral Win 2018 Women in Architecture Awards

award · 2026-05-05

The 2018 Women in Architecture Awards, organized by The Architectural Review and The Architects' Journal, honored Peruvian architect Sandra Barclay (1967) with Architect of the Year and Paraguayan architect Gloria Cabral (1982) with the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture. Barclay, co-founder of Lima-based Barclay & Crousse, was recognized for the Museo de Sitio de Paracas, built on ruins of a museum destroyed by a 2007 earthquake. The structure features wind chimneys for ventilation and cooling, using pozzolanic concrete that blends with the desert landscape. Cabral, partner at Gabinete de Arquitectura since 2013, won for projects like the Teletón Children's Rehabilitation Centre and the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Art at the University of Asunción. Her work often employs local materials and simple techniques, such as the Breaking the Siege vault built in five days for the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, where she won the Golden Lion. The awards, now in their seventh year, are part of a broader campaign by AR and AJ to highlight women's contributions to architecture. Other initiatives include the arcVision Prize by Italcementi, websites like Pioneering Women of American Architecture and Italy's Architette. In 2018, women architects also curated the Venice Architecture Biennale (Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara), designed the Serpentine Pavilion (Frida Escobedo), and the MPavilion in Melbourne (Carme Pinós).
