San Giorgio Island Offers Two Exhibitions as Biennale Alternative

exhibition · 2026-05-08

The 61st Venice Biennale features two exhibitions at San Giorgio Maggiore. "Georg Baselitz. Eroi d'Oro," curated by Luca Massimo Barbero at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, displays significant works by German painter Georg Baselitz, who passed away on April 30 at 88. His paintings depict inverted figures set against golden backgrounds, drawing inspiration from medieval icons and integrating Japanese calligraphy. In close proximity, Barry X Ball's "The Shape of Time," curated by Bob Nickas, unveils 23 sculptures, many of which are being shown for the first time, crafted through 3D scanning and CNC milling, followed by detailed manual finishing. Additionally, "Transforming Energy" by Marina Abramović, curated by Shai Baitel, represents the first major exhibition of a living female artist at Gallerie dell'Accademia.
