San Francisco's Summer Art Scene Features Picasso, Cézanne, Matisse Exhibitions and Gallery Shows

San Francisco's summer art scene centers on major museum exhibitions. The De Young Museum hosts one hundred Picassos from the Musée Picasso, while the Museum of Modern Art displays dozens of works by Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse from Gertrude Stein and Leo Stein's collection. Concurrently, the San Francisco Opera presents Wagner's Ring. Gallery Paule Anglim featured two significant solo exhibitions. Paul Kos showed works from May 4 to June 11, 2011, including drawings from 1969 and newer pieces like Aspen (2009) and Beethoven Piano Sonata #13 (2009), which create a visual and aural tunnel. Shahzia Sikander's exhibition at the San Francisco Art Institute's Walter McBean Galleries ran from April 23 to June 25, 2011, featuring digital animations, videos, and works on paper, though it faced criticism for curator Hou Hanru's installation and texts. The show included Gossamer, a video with composer Du Yun, and a work documenting South Asian military bands.
