San Francisco's New Institute of Contemporary Art to Open in 2022
The Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICASF) will open in summer 2022 at 901 Minnesota Street in the Dogpatch neighborhood. The 1,000-square-meter brick building, originally constructed in 1940, previously housed a paint company and a children's gym. The museum is led by director Alison Gass, who previously served as director and chief curator of the San José Institute of Contemporary Art for 14 months. ICASF is primarily supported by the Minnesota Street Project Foundation and the Rappaport Family Foundation, managed by Deborah and Andy Rappaport, founders of the Minnesota Street Project. The endowment has reached $2.5 million, with additional funding from Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger. The museum will have no permanent collection, free admission, and aims to pay artists fairly. It will focus on social issues, support local artists, and prioritize underrepresented communities, inspired by Black Lives Matter protests. Spaces are designed for monumental installations. A construction site visit is possible in January 2022 during the FOG Design+Art Fair.
