San Francisco, New York, Milan Art Travel Guide for May 2026

The FT's Maria Shollenbarger highlights art destinations for May 2026. In San Francisco, twin shows at the de Young and Legion of Honor explore Venice's influence: 'Monet and Venice' (through July 26) at the de Young features over 100 works by Claude Monet, who visited Venice only once; 'Drawn to Venice' (through August 2) at the Legion of Honor presents Renaissance to rococo works on paper by Francesco Guardi, Rosalba Carriera, and Tiepolo. The Huntington Hotel reopened in March after a renovation by Ken Fulk. In New York, MoMA's second Marcel Duchamp retrospective (through August 22) includes about 300 works, such as 'Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2', 'Fountain', and 'L.H.O.O.Q.'. The Whitby hotel, three blocks from MoMA, offers terrace rooms. In Milan, 'Vico Magistretti and Japan' at Fondazione Vico Magistretti (through February 25, 2027) showcases the architect's passion for Japan, with models by Écal graduates. Tiny Vico Milano hotel, with seven suites, is near Porta Ticinese.
