San Francisco exhibition explores olfactory design as a rising field

exhibition · 2026-04-27

In San Francisco, the Museum of Craft and Design is showcasing its first exhibition dedicated to olfactory design, titled 'Living with Scents'. Curated by Elisabetta Pisu and Clara Muller, this exhibit aims to raise awareness of our sense of smell, which has diminished due to mask-wearing during the pandemic. It includes five distinct sections, starting with 'Spray it. Don't Say it. Communication, Emotion and Memory', which imagines a future where scents are encapsulated, featuring an 'Olfactory Time Capsule for Earthly Memories' necklace designed for astronauts. Other themes explored are olfactory culture, the beauty of nature, health, and a new appreciation for scent. The exhibition runs until June 5, 2022.
