San Francisco Ballet Returns to Jacob's Pillow After 70 Years

In August, the San Francisco Ballet (SFB) will make a landmark return to the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, its first visit since debuting on the East Coast in 1956. That initial performance, led by Lew Christensen, showcased three programs featuring eight ballets by George Balanchine and Christensen, receiving critical acclaim that propelled SFB to international recognition. This year, the company will showcase unique programs at the Ted Shawn Theatre (August 5–9) and the Henry J. Leir Stage (August 5–8). Under the guidance of artistic director Tamara Rojo, the lineup combines classical and contemporary works. The Ted Shawn Theatre will host pieces like Hans van Manen's Grosse Fuge and Akram Khan's Dust Duet, with live music from the Grammy-winning Albany Symphony. Outdoor shows will include works influenced by Argentinian tango and Isadora Duncan. Rojo highlighted the joy of performing outdoors and the importance of reconnecting with the Berkshires dance community.
