San Francisco approves plan for world's largest public art park on Treasure Island

San Francisco has approved a plan to build the world's largest public art park on Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay. The project, led by the Treasure Island Development Authority, aims to invest $50 million through the "1% for Art" program, which has been used since 1975 to fund public art. The islands, former naval stations, have undergone over 20 years of remediation costing more than $1.5 billion, with plans to bring over 8,000 residents. The park will feature monumental public artworks, with the first three sculptures expected to be installed in spring 2019 at Building One Plaza and Yerba Buena Hilltop Park. Other venues include a historic chapel for indoor performances and former navy hangars for film screenings and exhibitions. Artist residencies lasting three to six months are also planned. The name "Treasure Island" will serve as inspiration for artists. The island was previously considered for the Lucas Museum, but George Lucas chose Los Angeles instead.
