Samuele Alfani Reinterprets Calvino's American Lessons in Florence Exhibition

Florentine painter and video maker Samuele Alfani (born 1985) presents '6 proposte per il nuovo millennio' at Serre Torrigiani in Florence, a show inspired by Italo Calvino's unfinished 'American Lessons'. The exhibition, set among the greenhouses, features a synthetic yet varied sample of Alfani's production, bringing together works from different periods and circumstances. Alfani associates moving images through colors that sustain the image like a cinematic shot, aiming to free his works from temporal consistency. He identifies in his practice Calvino's values of lightness, rapidity, exactness, visibility, and multiplicity. Alfani is a recent finalist for the Arte Laguna Prize, where his painting 'PREda-per rimedio dell'anima', addressing gender-based violence, was exhibited at the Arsenale in Venice. Beyond painting, he creates short films and videos, recently collaborating with composer and pianist Giulia Mazzoni on the video clip 'Veloluce', presented at Florence's historic venue Le Giubbe Rosse. Alfani's artistic practice combines his training as a director with painting, approaching the canvas with a filmmaker's eye.
