Samuel Hindolo Named Future Great 2025 by ArtReview
ArtReview has named Samuel Hindolo as one of its Future Greats for 2025, selected by associate editor Martin Herbert. Hindolo, a Maryland-born, Bard College-educated artist based between Berlin and Brussels, has developed a distinctive practice centered on veiled threat, vulnerable bodies, and racial violence. His 2023 exhibition at Galerie Buchholz in Berlin featured paintings like 'NUQUE' and 'THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER,' where figures face away, refusing easy interpretation. The show also included a collaboration with London-based artist Solomon Garçon, presenting C-prints and a soundwork. Hindolo's 2024 exhibition 'EUROSTAR' in New York referenced Alfred Machin's 1913 silent comedy about a leopard escaping a circus in Brussels, incorporating themes of imperialism and postcolonialism through collages, drawings, and paintings. He also draws on Bob Shaw's concept of 'slow glass' from his 1966 short story. Hindolo has given no explicating interviews and only one unofficial photograph exists, but he writes his own handouts. His work builds unhurried, probing scenarios, reinventing itself show by show. He holds a BA from the University of Maryland (2012) and an MFA from Bard College (2021), and has had four solo shows since graduating.
