digital · 2026-07-26

At its Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled three new foldable smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8, in addition to the Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9. The Galaxy Z Fold8 features a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio when opened, offering a slightly wider and shorter profile than typical smartphones. Hubert Lee, the executive vice-president and head of mobile experience design, elaborated on the 'Emotive Geometry' design philosophy, which enhances Samsung's Essential Design to foster emotional connections and comfort as AI integration deepens. He noted that a dedicated physical side key facilitates easier access to advanced technology. The unique form factors of the foldables enhance AI experiences tailored to each device, including multitasking on the Fold8 Ultra's expansive screen, the FlexWindow on the Flip8, and the Fold8's one-handed grip. Samsung's design teams, spread across various global studios, work closely with engineering and product planning from the outset. The Galaxy Watch series employs Computational Design, merging AI and design expertise to enhance wearability. The interview was conducted by Jonathan Bell, Wallpaper's Transport and Technology Editor.
