Samson Kambalu and Teresa Margolles win Fourth Plinth commissions for Trafalgar Square
London's Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square will showcase two new pieces of art. In 2023, Samson Kambalu’s sculpture 'Antelope' will be revealed, illustrating a significant 1914 encounter between Malawian Baptist preacher John Chilembwe and English missionary John Chorley. This artwork recreates a historical image in which Chilembwe, defying colonial restrictions, wears a hat in front of white individuals, appearing larger than life, while Chorley is depicted at a normal scale. In 2024, Teresa Margolles will introduce '850 Improntas,' featuring casts of 850 trans individuals' faces arranged in a Tzompantli style, reminiscent of Mesoamerican skull racks. The Fourth Plinth, constructed in 1841, remained vacant for 150 years until Mark Wallinger's installation in 1999.
