Samara Scott's immersive installation at Tramway explores consumer culture through suspended materials

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Samara Scott is presenting a new horizontal suspension installation at Tramway in Glasgow, running through October 28. The artist, known for her expansive approach to painting that incorporates unconventional materials, has created works using yogurt, carpet, plaster, food coloring, fabric softener, wine glasses, oil, and costume jewelry in previous installations. Her 2015 Frieze London piece featured a rainbow-toned liquid suspension in a steel container, while last year she created a glowing semiabstract wall work for Turner Contemporary. Scott's work intentionally balances consumer goods on the edge between attraction and repulsion, often using items meant for literal consumption. The Tramway installation was inspired by the gallery's architectural resemblance to open-air markets, arcades, and glasshouses. Scott has previously expressed skepticism about the art world in a Guardian interview, suggesting she might pursue stunt work instead. Her current exhibition aims to bring audiences close to what she describes as the 'glitching grit' of contemporary culture through large-scale suspended compositions that engage with material excess and sensory experience.
