Samara Golden's 'A Trap in Soft Division' at Yerba Buena Center explores urban alienation through mirrored spaces.

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From March 11 to May 29, 2016, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco hosted Samara Golden's exhibition titled 'A Trap in Soft Division.' This installation reimagined the gallery's natural skylights, creating 18 illuminated alcoves organized into three clusters of six identical furniture arrangements. Each arrangement included a couch with table lamps on either side, facing a low coffee table, all positioned upside down with floor-to-ceiling windows behind, reflected in large tiled mirrors below. Golden skillfully used both natural and artificial light to evoke varied atmospheres, contrasting cool tones with existing warmth. Elements like an abandoned plate of pasta and a casually tossed blanket hinted at recent human activity while preserving strict uniformity. The work critiques cultural standardization in areas such as tract housing and personal electronics, presenting spaces that feel both familiar and strange. Viewers gaze into these inverted domestic settings, unable to physically enter, experiencing what Golden calls 'a trap because we are not truly given a choice.' The artist aims for the work to 'break through the solitude it is meant to depict,' fostering shared experiences, although the cold mirror surfaces may amplify feelings of distance among strangers. Situated at 701 Mission Street at 3rd Street, the exhibition examines how mass-produced designs allow for superficial claims of individuality in urban life.
