Sam Falls Blends Nature and Minimalism at Galleria Civica di Trento

exhibition · 2026-05-04

American artist Sam Falls (San Diego, 1984) is the subject of a solo exhibition titled 'Nature is the New Minimalism' at Galleria Civica di Trento, curated by Margherita de Pilati. The show centers on his Rain Paintings, created through nocturnal dives into the Pacific Ocean where he collects algae, lays them on canvas on the beach, and sprinkles dry pigment that reacts with moisture to leave imprints. These works evoke both Action Painting and Minimalism, blending figurative and abstract elements. The exhibition also features neon and paraffin sculptures 'Arctic Body' and 'Antarctic Body' that reference melting polar ice, a video 'Untitled (Absence of Evidence is Evidence of Absence)' depicting a rainy, desolate Los Angeles, ceramic sculptures with organic leaf and flower motifs, and three videos projecting forest shadows onto different colors. Falls currently participates in the Sydney Biennale and lives in Los Angeles, where it rains only three days a year. The exhibition presents nature as a pure aesthetic experience, devoid of romantic sentiment.
