Salzburg Exhibition 'Performing the East' Showcases Eastern European Performance Art Legacy
From April 22 to June 23, 2009, the Salzburger Kunstverein in Salzburg hosted 'Performing the East – A Western Anniversary' to commemorate two decades since the revolutions in Eastern Europe. Curated by Hemma Schmutz, the exhibition featured performance art from Central and Eastern Europe, spotlighting artists such as Marina Abramović, Raša Todosijević, Tomislav Gotovac, Ion Grigorescu, and Julius Koller. Gotovac examined the boundaries between public and private life, while Koller offered critiques of the Czechoslovak regime. Abramović's piece 'Thomas' Lips' pushed the limits of endurance. Todosijević's work questioned authority, and Grigorescu's film depicted themes of isolation. Emerging artists like Dan Perjovschi and Tanja Ostojić also showcased recent pieces, highlighting a dynamic artistic community previously underappreciated in the West, alongside live performances and discussions.
