Salvatore Fancello: The Enfant Prodige of Italian Ceramics

artist · 2026-04-27

Salvatore Fancello (Dorgali, 1916 – Bregu Rapit, 1941) was a Sardinian ceramic artist whose brief but brilliant career captured the rural world of his homeland. Born into a family of twelve children, he apprenticed with ceramist Ciriaco Piras and won a scholarship to the ISIA in Monza in 1930, studying under sculptors Arturo Martini and Marino Marini alongside Costantino Nivola and Giovanni Pintori. In 1936 he graduated with top marks and exhibited at the VI Triennale di Milano, presenting works including 'I segni dello Zodiaco' and a graffito wall drawing of exotic animals. In 1937, critic Giulio Carlo Argan encouraged him to apply for a Ministry of Education prize, which he won in 1938. That year he began working at the Mazzotti ceramics workshop in Albissola Marina, producing 125 pieces and a large nativity scene with life-size figures, exhibited in Turin in December 1940. In January 1939 he joined the army but obtained leave to participate in the Triennale, where his ceramics were awarded. He also created works for the Bocconi University cafeteria, left unfinished due to his death on March 12, 1941, on the Albanian front. A retrospective was held at the Pinacoteca di Brera in 1942, and the nativity scene was shown at the Brooklyn Museum in 1950. Today his works are housed in the archaeological museum of Dorgali in a dedicated section.
