Salvatore Emblema's Open-Air Exhibition at Museo Emblema in Terzigno

The Museo Emblema in Terzigno, near Naples, presents "La natura in-trasparenza," an open-air exhibition of works by Salvatore Emblema (1929–2006), running from September 22, 2023 to January 26, 2024. The exhibition is co-produced by Scabec S.p.A. and the Museo Emblema, and is curated by Renata Caragliano and Emanuele Leone Emblema. Emblema, a Neapolitan artist who traveled across Europe and settled in Rome in the early 1950s, had his first solo show in 1954 at Galleria San Marco, organized by Ugo Moretti and Carlo Levi. He frequently visited New York, where he was influenced by Mark Rothko. From the 1970s, he exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome, Rotterdam, Turin, and Milan, and participated in the 1980 Venice Biennale. In 1981, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence acquired his self-portrait "L'autoritratto di Emblema" (1981), featuring a black lapillus oval. The Museo Emblema, established in 2026 per the artist's wishes, spans 600 sqm indoors and 3,000 sqm of park, with educational workshops for students and young artists. The outdoor display rotates every six months to show the full collection. The exhibition recreates the "feste" Emblema hosted each September from 1978 to 2001, featuring large and medium-sized canvases, educational games, guided tours, and musical events. Campania Region President Vincenzo De Luca noted that the open-air setting reflects Emblema's belief that "true painting is in nature."
