Salvatore Arancio's Multifaceted Exhibition at Federica Schiavo, Rome
Salvatore Arancio (born 1974, Catania) presents 'Neither His Nor Yours' at Galleria Federica Schiavo in Rome, a show weaving together sculpture, textiles, and works on paper. The exhibition's title references a track by Coil. Arancio's anthropological approach leads him to adopt local techniques during residencies. The sculptures, made in Hungary for his 2024 show at MACTE in Termoli, draw inspiration from the surreal, anthropomorphic forms of Bruno Weber Park in Switzerland, while their iridescent, metallic glaze was achieved with a Hungarian artisan using an ancient enameling technique. Textile works from 'La Douceur de l’Eau du Doux (40.000m2 – 70 Salariés)' originated from a residency at Château-Musée de Tournon-sur-Rhône, addressing the closure of the ITDT factory, which produced Art Nouveau fabrics. After an initial shutdown, 70 former employees reopened the factory, but climate change and the drying of the Doux River forced a second closure ten years later. Arancio collaborated with ex-workers to create collage-like pieces from archived patterns, honoring the town and workers. His recent series 'Le Rayon Vert' explores the optical phenomenon through abstract, visionary works blurring painting and photography. In 'Mineral Being,' he alters a 1970s mineralogy volume, transforming illustrations into fantastical images. The exhibition also reflects Arancio's commitment to sustainability, using recycled brick plinths and minimizing travel.
