Salvador Dalí's Birthplace Opens as Immersive Museum in Figueres

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The birthplace of Salvador Dalí in Figueres, Catalonia, has been transformed into a museum offering an immersive experience of the artist's early life. Located at 6 Carrer Monturiol in a 19th-century four-story building, Casa Natal Dalí preserves the five-room apartment where Dalí lived until age eight. Original Art Nouveau floors, kitchen, and bathroom remain intact. The austere bedroom where Dalí was born has been recreated based on his descriptions, featuring an antique wooden bed beneath a reproduction of Velázquez's Christ. Audiovisual installations in the former veranda-gallery depict Dalí starting to draw at age six. The renovation project took five years and cost four million euros. Director Eduard Bech stated the goal was to help visitors understand Dalí's family relationships and early influences, as well as the local landscape that inspired his practice. The team benchmarked existing Dalí spaces worldwide, including the Dalí Triangle in Empordà, to focus on the private life behind the public persona.
