Saluzzo's Start/storia arte festival reinvents itself with autumn edition and Maoist propaganda show

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The fourth edition of Start/storia arte Saluzzo, themed 'Rivoluzione!', has been completely redesigned by Fondazione Amleto Bertoni and the Comune di Saluzzo. Due to COVID-19, the event moved from May to autumn, transforming the city at the foot of Monviso into a capital of art for two months. The program includes the Artigianato exhibition (until September 27), the 25th edition of the Arte Contemporanea exhibition (October 2 – November 1), and the 43rd edition of the Mostra Nazionale dell'Antiquariato (November 13–22). A major highlight is 'CHINA: Rivoluzione/Evoluzione', a show of 89 original Maoist propaganda posters and paintings from the Hafnia Foundation, hosted by Istituto Garuzzo at La Castiglia. Istituto Garuzzo President Rosalba Garuzzo emphasized the artistic value of the posters, noting they express universal human sentiments. After Saluzzo, the collection will return to China and never leave again. Casa Cavassa hosts 30 artisan creations and the 42nd Premio Matteo Olivero, won by German artist Veit Laurent Kurz for his site-specific work 'Campi Flegrei Conferenza', featuring a volcano inhabited by his invented Dilldapp creatures. The ex Caserma Musso presents a monographic exhibition of Piero Gilardi, curated by Giuseppe Biasutti, exploring the nature/culture dialectic. The festival concludes at Castiglia with the 43rd Mostra Nazionale dell'Antiquariato, a historic antiques fair.
