Salone del Mobile postponed to June, overlapping with Art Basel and Design Miami

The Salone del Mobile di Milano, originally scheduled for April 21-26, has been postponed to June 16-21 due to the coronavirus emergency. The decision was confirmed after a special board meeting of Federlegno Arredo Eventi and consultations with Fiera Milano and city authorities. The event, which attracts over 2,200 exhibitors and around 600 young designers annually, along with the Fuorisalone, is a key fixture for the global furniture market. The 2019 edition drew over 386,000 visitors from 181 countries. Cancellation would have caused an estimated economic loss of €120 million. The new dates coincide with Art Basel in Switzerland and Design Miami, creating potential conflicts. Mayor Giuseppe Sala urged the furniture sector to keep Milan active and called on the government to support the industry. Gabriele Cavallaro of Blank and the Isola Design District expressed optimism. Florence's culture, fashion, and design assessor Tommaso Sacchi proposed a joint communication campaign between Salone del Mobile and Pitti Uomo Firenze, which will occur in the same week, and a partnership with Ferrovie dello Stato. MIA Photo Fair also announced postponement, and miart, directed by Alessandro Rabottini, is expected to be rescheduled as well.
