Salone del Mobile 2022: Art and Design Converge in Milan

The 2022 Salone del Mobile in Milan featured several cross-disciplinary projects blending art and design. At Fabbrica del Vapore, ISIA Faenza presented 14 ceramic totems created by students under the guidance of Neapolitan artist Diego Cibelli. The works were produced in a workshop exploring slip casting and plastic forming techniques. A book on the project, edited by President Giovanna Cassese and Director Maria Concetta Cossa, was also released. At Porta Garibaldi station, the 20th edition of Green Island, curated by Claudia Zanfi and Atelier del Paesaggio, transformed the atrium into a floral park with works by Antonella De Nisco (natural fiber weavings), Bloom&Me (floral photography), and Caracol (3D-printed solitary bee hives in PLA bioplastic). The initiative builds on previous Green Island actions, including Milan's first artist apiary in 2015. In the Alcova district, Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis and OMA (founded by Rem Koolhaas) presented 'Monumental Wonders' for SolidNature at the Lavanderia dell'ex-Ospedale Militare di Baggio. The immersive exhibition featured unique stone pieces, including a marble bed (Inhabitable by OMA) and a pink onyx monolith bathroom installation by Marcelis, with a rough stone block serving as an electrical outlet powering the entire space.
