Salone del Mobile 2016: Classic Living Returns to Milan Design Week

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The 55th Salone del Mobile in Milan, under the artistic direction of Studio Ciarmoli Queda, focuses on classic living as a synonym for contemporaneity and innovation. The centerpiece is the matrioska-like exhibition 'Before Design: Classic' in Pavilion 15, spanning 800 sqm across eight rooms inspired by Palladian villas. It features multimedia installations, textile works by Lisa Rampilli, and ceramic plates by Marco Basta. At its core, a theater inspired by the Teatro Olimpico in Sabbioneta screens a short film by Matteo Garrone depicting a post-apocalyptic world where children salvage classic furniture. Curator Beppe Finessi presents 'Stanze. Altre filosofie dell’abitare' at the Triennale di Milano during the 21st Esposizione Internazionale. The 19th Salone Satellite addresses 'New Materials, New Design.' Notable stands include Zanotta (inspired by Piero Bottoni's Villa Muggia), Cassina (Patricia Urquiola's 'Origins of the Future' referencing the Rietveld Pavilion), Driade (LivingRoom by Starck, Grcic, Fukasawa, et al.), Moroso (eight collections plus debuts), Natuzzi (celebrating Puglia), and USM (50th anniversary installation by Atelier oï).
