Salone del Mobile 2016: 5VIE District Opens with Raw Edges' Herringbones and a Return to Ornamentation
The 5VIE district of Milan's Design Week opens with two contrasting exhibitions. At Garage San Remo, curator Federica Sala presents Raw Edges' 'Herringbones', a project exploring design as process rather than finished product. The Israeli-London duo, Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer, developed a method of dipping wooden boards at a 45-degree angle into pigment to create chromatic decorations. After attempts with molds and rubber, simple pigment immersion proved most effective. Meanwhile, at via Cesare Correnti 14, the exhibition 'Ladies and Gentlemen' curated by PS and Secondome features Italian brands such as Bottega Nove, Hervet Manufacturier, Tommaso Fantoni, Mario Milana, and Studio Pepe. Set in a historic Milanese house abandoned for fifteen years but once a hub for 1980s parties, the show emphasizes small series, craftsmanship, and decorative excess.
