Sal Khan's AI Tutoring Vision Faces Reality Check as Khanmigo Struggles to Engage Students

Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, acknowledges that his AI-powered tutoring chatbot Khanmigo has not sparked the educational revolution he predicted three years ago. Many students have found the tool frustrating or simply don't use it much, according to Khan's own assessment. The chatbot was developed with early access to OpenAI's GPT-4 model after OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman approached Khan Academy in summer 2022. Khan had envisioned AI providing every student with a personal tutor that could transform learning, as he expressed in a 2023 TED Talk. Early adopter Hobart High School in northwest Indiana saw mixed results: geometry teacher Kristen Musall appreciated Khanmigo's encouraging tone but found students didn't engage with it, and she no longer uses it in class. Superintendent Peggy Buffington noted a learning curve but sees value in the tool for homework help. Khan Academy's chief learning officer Kristen DiCerbo observed that students struggle to ask effective questions, limiting AI's ability to personalize instruction. A recent Pew survey indicates many teenagers believe AI-powered cheating is prevalent in schools. While Khan remains optimistic about AI's potential in education, he now views it as just part of the solution rather than a complete answer. Khan Academy has recently overhauled its product to integrate Khanmigo more directly into academic practice problems after finding students weren't seeking out the chatbot's help independently.
