Sakuliu Pavavaljung sentenced to prison for rape, removed from Venice Biennale and Documenta
Sakuliu Pavavaljung, an indigenous Taiwanese artist, received a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence after being convicted of rape. The incident took place in early 2021 when he invited a fan to his studio on February 9, then proposed a trip to Dashi Canyon where they camped near a stream. The assault occurred during this outing. His conviction followed accusations made in 2021, which led to his removal as Taiwan's representative at the Venice Biennale; Yuan Goang-Ming replaced him for the 2024 exhibition. Additionally, Sakuliu's participation in Documenta 15 in 2022 was cancelled. Born into the Pulima of the Malang clan in Tjavadran village, part of the northern Paiwan Raval nation, he comes from a region celebrated for its craft traditions.
