Saint of Athens Transforms Mykonos Chapel with Monochrome Byzantine Frescoes

Located within the Kalesma Hotel in Mykonos, the Saint Demetrius Chapel presents a modern take on Byzantine art, crafted by the Athens-based firm Saint of Athens and illustrator Gerasimos Hatzis. Its interior is adorned with black-and-white frescoes illustrating the Passion of Christ, created by K-Studio, while Studio Bonarchi designed the interiors. The chapel adheres to Cycladic architectural styles, featuring a cubic form and a whitewashed façade. The frescoes blend Byzantine artistic elements, including frontal compositions and geometric patterns influenced by tribal designs, with gold halos providing the sole splash of color. Co-owner Sophia Kusathana proposed the project, which took almost a year to finalize, complemented by a soundscape from Stephanos Giakoumakis. Gavriil Papadiotis captured the project in photographs.
