Born around 480 AD into a noble family, Saint Benedict studied in Rome before becoming a hermit near Subiaco, influenced by the monk Romanus of Subiaco. His monastic Rule, emphasizing community life, stability, fidelity, and obedience, was developed at Monte Cassino. This framework helped monasteries preserve ancient texts by authors like Plato, Virgil, Aristotle, and Ovid during Europe's post-Roman decline. Monasteries became centers for agriculture, education, and hospitality, contributing to societal stability. They advanced farming techniques like crop rotation and irrigation while serving as schools teaching grammar, arithmetic, music, and astronomy. Benedict's sister, Saint Scholastica, reportedly founded the female branch of the order.
