Saher Nassar Discusses Humor, Violence, and Upcoming Decolonial Branding Project
Saher Nassar delves into the human experience through dark humor and the stark contrast between violence in childhood and adulthood. His latest work, Residue, exhibited at Art Dubai, employs vibrant colors to highlight the clash of childhood symbols with themes of violence, exemplified by Untitled No.3 (2023), which portrays a female soldier wearing one boot and a pink children's shoe. In his exhibition The Front Side Strikes The Most (2023) at Zawyeh Gallery in Dubai, he explored soldiers from various historical, philosophical, and social lenses, steering clear of nationalism despite numerous references to Palestine. The series Children of the Occupation (2023) illustrates the mindset of children raised under occupation. In the Network series (2021), Nassar utilized real blood samples in clear boxes to comment on how authorities manipulate individuals through information. He is currently working on Decolonial Branding, a collaborative project with an institute in the UAE and the Rhode Island School of Design, which will be displayed simultaneously in both locations with distinct behavioral languages. Nassar identifies as a conceptual artist, viewing medium merely as a tool.
