Sahej Rahal's 'The Dekkan Trap' at Midlands Art Centre Blends Mythology and Modern Critique
Sahej Rahal's exhibition titled 'The Dekkan Trap' was showcased at the Midlands Art Centre in Birmingham from February 17 to April 22, 2018. The display included six large, untitled sculptures crafted from postbox-red, black, or off-white resin, featuring elements such as a mannequin's leg. Additionally, seven sizable drawings illustrated Hindu deities set against industrial backdrops, along with unfired clay sculptures and a video projection that captured activists at the Faslane Peace Camp, culminating in a bomb's descent. A white shaggy carpet presented artifacts that combined alien-like skulls with mechanical components. The artwork critiques militarism and nationalist supremacy, alluding to India's far-right nationalists. The Deccan Traps, associated with the Shiva Crater, span 500,000 square kilometers. The exhibition received coverage in ArtReview Asia in Spring 2018.
