Sagrada Família to be completed in 2026, 100 years after Gaudí's death

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Sagrada Família basilica in Barcelona, created by Antoni Gaudí, is anticipated to be finished in 2026, marking a century since his passing. Construction commenced in 1882 but has encountered interruptions due to the Spanish Civil War, funding challenges, and the pandemic. The remaining tasks involve the Glory Facade and a 172.5-meter tower dedicated to Jesus Christ. A legal conflict has emerged regarding a new staircase, with local residents on Carrer de Mallorca, led by Salvador Barroso, suing the Sagrada Família Foundation, arguing it was not part of Gaudí's initial designs. Chief architect Jordi Fauli maintains that the work adheres to Gaudí's models, despite the original plans being lost in the 1930s. A city council ruling is anticipated by May 2023. Recent developments include the Virgin Mary tower (2021) and the towers for Mark and Luke (2022).
