Safdie Architects designs Cherokee Heritage Center revival with pavilions, trails, and preserved seminary columns
In Tahlequah, Oklahoma, a new campus for the Cherokee Heritage Center is being designed by Safdie Architects, with an expected completion date in 2028. The Cherokee Nation has commissioned this project, which involves collaboration with Anishinabe Design and PWP Landscape on a 43-acre site that was once home to the Cherokee Female Seminary, founded in 1851. Renderings from August 2025 depict pavilions arranged in a crescent shape, linked by pathways to a reconstructed Diligwa village and the Tsa-La-Gi amphitheater, designed by Charles ‘Chief’ Boyd. The Great Hall will incorporate triangular skylights, while new facilities will include a museum, educational areas, and a research center. Three columns from the original seminary will be preserved in a plaza, and Christine Neuhoff commended the project's sensitivity to Cherokee culture.
